Questions and answers

Short answers to common questions. Each one links to the part of the terms it comes from, and the terms are what count.

The terms are still a draft and not yet in force, so these answers may change.

Travelling

What is the Travacant fee?

It is what you pay Travacant for arranging your booking. It is added to the host's price for the stay and cleaning: 8% if you host on Travacant yourself, 16% if you do not. The price you see before you book already includes it.

When is my card charged?

If you book within 30 days of check-in, your card is authorised when you book and charged when your free-cancellation period ends. If you book further ahead, your card is saved and charged 30 days before check-in, or earlier if the host's full-refund period ends first. If you cancel before the charge, nothing is taken.

Can I cancel for free?

Yes, for a short time after your booking is confirmed: 24 hours, or 48 hours if you host on Travacant. Cancel in that time and you get everything back.

What do I get back if I cancel later?

The host's cancellation policy, shown on the listing before you book, decides it. It is judged on the day you ask to cancel. More than 60 days before check-in you always get everything back, whatever the policy says.

Is there a 14-day cooling-off period?

No. The legal 14-day right to cancel does not apply to accommodation booked for set dates. Your ways to cancel are the free-cancellation period and the host's policy.

What happens if the host cancels?

You get back everything you paid, including the Travacant fee.

Something is wrong when I arrive. What should I do?

Do not confirm check-in. Tell the host in your booking's conversation, keep evidence such as photos, and raise it within 24 hours of your check-in time, while the host's share of your payment is still held.

What if the host and I cannot agree?

You can open a dispute with a reason and evidence. Travacant then decides on the host's behalf, and you never get back less than the host's policy would have given. You can still go to court.

What does a host see about me?

Once you contact them, your profile: your first name, photo, whether you are verified, your ratings, your cancellation rate and anything you write in "About you". Your gender only if their home is women-only or men-only, or once they accept your booking. Never your surname or email address.

Hosting

What does it cost to host?

Travacant charges you nothing. Stripe charges a payout fee of 0.25% plus 10p when your share is paid to your bank, and that comes off your share. Guests pay the Travacant fee on top of your price.

When do I get paid?

Your share is released when the guest confirms check-in, or about 24 hours after the check-in time. It is then paid to your bank automatically. Stripe holds new money for about 7 days first, so a booking charged close to check-in reaches your bank about a week after the charge.

What do I need before my home can take bookings?

A Stripe account set up through Travacant, a short name for guests' card statements, and your full name. Every host on Travacant hosts as a private person — we do not accept business hosts at present.

What do guests see about me?

Your profile, on your listing and in your conversations: your first name, photo, gender, whether you are verified, your ratings, your cancellation rate and anything you write in "About you". Your full name is not shown on the site.

Can I set my own cancellation policy?

Yes. Up to four steps, none starting more than 60 days before check-in, and you can make your home non-refundable for the last 60 days. A change applies to bookings confirmed after you save it.

What happens if I cancel a booking?

The guest gets everything back and you pay no fee. If you cancel close to the stay without a valid reason, you may get a strike, and the cancelled nights stay closed on your calendar.

Who decides a dispute with a guest?

Travacant decides it on your behalf, from that booking's money and under your published policy, and tells you both why. You can still go to court.

Can I delete my home?

Only if it has never had a confirmed stay. Otherwise you can unpublish it, and any confirmed bookings still go ahead.

Everyone

How do strikes work?

A strike is recorded when someone cancels close to a stay without a valid reason. You can appeal a strike once. At three strikes within 12 months, a person at Travacant decides whether to block the account.

How do I close my account?

Ask us through the Contact page (sign in first). There is no button for it yet. We delete your profile, photos and saved homes. Records of your bookings, with their conversations and reviews, are kept for 6 years from the end of the stay, with your name and contact details removed.
